Palawan is an archipelago situated in the western border of the Philippines approximately one (1) hour travel by air and 24 hours by boat Southwest of Manila. It is located 30 nautical miles South of Mindoro and 60 nautical miles North of Borneo. Except for northern towns, which are occasionally visited by storms, Palawan is generally typhoon free and is located in a zone which is free of earthquakes.
A relatively peaceful province, Palawan is considered the Last Frontier of the Philippines. It is a sanctuary to an amazing variety of fauna and flora found nowhere else in the world. As the country’s largest province in terms of land area with its coastline stretching almost 2,000 kilometers long, indented by numerous coves and bays, it is composed of 1,769 islands and islets surrounded by coral shelf with an exceptionally rich marine life. Palawan was rated by the National Geographic Traveler Magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007, and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes".
An anchor tourist destination, Palawan is home to the best island resorts of the Philippines catering to the international celebrities and the extremely wealthy. It is host to two (2) of the Philippines’ five (5) world heritage sites; a) the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park located in the Central Sulu Sea, in the municipality of Cagayancillo, 181 k.m. southeast of Puerto Princesa City; and (2) Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (Underground River), the premier ecotourism destination of Puerto Princesa City. Underground River is currently No. 1 under its category in the New7Wonders of Nature. |
